70'an
Ditahun 1968, sound yang akan menjadi terkenal dengan sebutan heavy metal telah bersatu. Di Januari, band dari Francisco Blue Cheer mengeluarkan cover song dari lagunya Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues", di album debut mereka Vincebus Eruptum dan banyak yang beranggapan bahwa rekaman pertama orisinil heavy metal adalah dari album tersebut.
Progressive rock
Genre ini memang cenderung ke Rock tapi tetap aja ada unsur metalnya, yaitu, lagu panjang, lirik berkata ke roh dan setan-setan dan melodi gitar yang panjang. beberapa band Progressive rock ini seperti Genesis, Marillion, Rush, Queen, Jethro Tull. Belakangan sekitar Akhir 80'an barulah muncul genre yang lebih tepat disebut Progressive metal seperti Dream Theater, Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, yang lebih cenderung ke visualisasi.
Punk
Punk juga merupakan genre yang tidak terlalu Metal awalnya. hingga pada akhir 60'an muncul Bapak punk Iggy Pop & The Stooges, New York Dolls dan memasuki pertengahan dan akhir 70'an baru munculah Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, The Ramones yang sangat kental logat Ingris-nya. Tapi punk nyaris runtuh ketika bertabrakan dengan Pop ditahun 80'an dan berubah menjadi New Wave.

Since the mid-1990s, popular styles such as nu metal, which often incorporates elements of funk and hip hop; and metalcore, which blends extreme metal with hardcore punk, have further expanded the definition of the genre.
